How can I minimise my waste?

See the follow hints to reduce, reuse or recycle your waste.

REDUCE

Take a good look at what goes in your bins each week and make a plan to reduce the waste, tackling one at a time.
Allow one small change to become a habit before tackling the next one.

For ways to reduce your waste visit reduce-recycle.com.au for practical tips.

REUSE

One person’s trash can be another’s treasure - consider donating old clothes and accessories, household items and furniture you no longer need to thrift stores/Op-shops.

When donating:

Check to see if they receive your goods.

Only donate items in a usable condition.

Place goods inside charity collection bins or donate over the counter. Don’t leave items beside bins or in doorways.

Visit Australian OpShop Listing to find your local store.

How do I set up an in-home waste separation system?

The basic rule of recycling: separation matters.
Set up an affective and easy-to-use recycling sorting system in your home.

Separating your waste inside as you use it, then taking it out to your bins and putting it in the right bin, saves you time and helps you help to get it right.

1. Use your kitchen caddy for food scraps and empty this in your green FOGO bin.
2. Use a separate container to collected paper, cans, tins, aerosols and plastics with the recycle symbol 1 and 2 and empty this into your yellow recycling bin. Remember no bagged items.
3. Use another container to collect glass bottles and jars and empty this into your purple glass bin. Remember no bagged items and no lids.
4. Use a waste bin for your remaining rubbish, bag this up and put it into your red landfill bin.

What do I do with E-waste?

E-waste – or electronic waste, refers to electronic products that are no longer wanted or working.
To protect our environment and recover more resources the Victorian Government banned all e-waste from landfill from 1 July 2019.

Drop off small e-waste items such as discs, phones and USB's at our collections points at the Port Fairy Moyne Shire Council office, Mortlake Library and Koroit Library.

Where are the resources for visitor accommodation property managers?

Asbestos

A website was established to be the primary source of information about asbestos for all Victorians.  It provides resources to help people understand the risks of asbestos, how to identify it and how to safely management it, including removal and disposal.  The site contains links to the latest information, guidance, forms and compliance codes for employers, licensed removalists, builders, tradespeople, council staff and members of the public, to assist in the safe management of asbestos across Victoria.

Buy recycled

With over 760,000 tonnes of waste produced in the Barwon South West each year, it has become clear that action must be taken. This is why Moyne, alongside other councils in the region, have recently launched the Buy Recycled campaign, encouraging our community to make the switch from single use materials to consciously purchasing products made from recycled material.

We hope the campaign will help to establish a circular economy, a new economic system that aims to minimise waste and the environmental impact of consumption by instead turning these materials into renewable resources! You can discover businesses stocking materials near you as well as other great sources of information by visiting buyrecycled.com.au.

And most importantly, ask, look, buy recycled!
