Getting the best deal on your energy bills

1. If you are having trouble paying your energy bill

If you are having difficulty paying your energy bill/s, or need assistance with getting a good deal, you may be able to access the Energy Assistance Program.

It provides free tailored energy affordability support for households at risk of financial hardship.

This service provides one-on-one help to navigate the energy market, and can help you manage the rising cost of living by saving money on energy bills.

To access the program, you should:

  • hold a Commonwealth Government Concession card; or
  • be struggling or expecting to struggle to pay your energy bill.

In the Moyne area the program is run by Anglicare Victoria.

2. Concessions for electricity, gas and water bills in Victoria

To be eligible for these concessions, the account holder needs to have one of the following concession cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card.

You need give your concession card details to your electricity, gas and water retailer in order to receive the concessions. Some concessions also need extra documentation, for eg life support concession.  More details here

There is also a concession for water bills:

  • Water and sewerage concession- 50% deduction on water and sewerage charges up to a yearly maximum (changes each year)

3. Get the ‘best offer’ from your gas or electricity retailers

This is the easiest way to lower your bill. Your Energy company must tell you if they have a cheaper energy plan available for your home, based on how you currently use electricity and gas.

On your bill, look for the words ‘could you save money on another plan?

If you are not sure if you are getting the best deal with your energy company, call them ask for their ‘best offer’.

4. Find the very best offer from all energy companies

Every two years it’s worth checking out whether you can get a better deal for your electricity and gas bills.

The Victorian Government’s energy price comparison website Victorian Energy Compare includes every plan from all energy companies and is totally independent.

It’s a great tool to help you to compare electricity, gas and solar offers based on information you provide about your household. 

On average, households have saved $330 per year from using Victorian Energy Compare.
