Getting Moyne fire ready

Published on 07 November 2024

As the fire season approaches, Moyne Shire Council’s fire prevention officers will be out and about supporting fire readiness across the shire.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Eversteyn said officers would be conducting fire hazard inspections across November 2024 and issuing clean-up notices to property owners where required.

Mr Eversteyn said the most effective approach is when fire safety is accepted as everyone’s responsibility.

“There are predictions of a high-risk fire season after a dry winter in our region, so we are asking the community to work together to reduce the risk of fire,” he said.

“Council has a defined role to play in fire prevention and property owners also have a responsibility to make sure their properties are clear of excess vegetation and flammable items.

“Through collaboration, we can help prepare our region for the coming fire season and reduce the risk of property damage or loss.”

He said there were some simple ways to get fire ready which includes clearing long grass and weeds, trimming trees and shrubs, cleaning gutters on buildings and removing flammable items away from buildings.

Mr Eversteyn said Council would offer free green waste disposal at its transfer stations across the weekend of 23-24 November 2024 to assist residents in their preparations.

“The intent is to support residents in their effort to get rid of excess garden waste they may have when preparing their properties,” he said.

“The free disposal weekend coincides with the CFA’s declared Fire Danger Period coming into force across Moyne at 1am on Monday 25 November 2024.

Free disposal will be available at the following locations:

  • Hawkesdale: Saturday 23 November, 8.30am –12.30pm
