Film and Q&A session to inspire action on climate change and plastic

Published on 06 February 2025

Council will host a free screening of the film Rising Up at the Reardon Theatre in Port Fairy, followed by a Q&A session with film-maker Kal Glanznig and local environmental advocates.

Rising Up explores global solutions around climate and ocean plastic, aiming to inspire and empower young people to take action.

Mayor, Cr Karen Foster said the annual youth survey conducted by Mission Australia highlighted that climate change and the environment was one of the top concerns for young people.

“The aim of the film was to provide a clear view of current concerns on climate and ocean plastic, along with an optimistic outlook to inspire and empower viewers to take action,” said Cr Foster.

“This screening aligns with Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement by providing an opportunity for residents to learn about global and local responses to plastic pollution and climate change,” she said.

“The event also provides an opportunity for Council to engage with the community ahead of the upcoming development of a new Environment and Sustainability Strategy. Community insights and discussions from this screening will help inform Council’s approach to future sustainability initiatives.”

“Moyne Shire has a unique natural environment, from coastline to farmlands. This screening is a chance to reflect on how we can contribute to global solutions while protecting and preserving our local landscapes for future generations.”

A key focus of this event is also to highlight what is being done at a local level and how community members can get involved. The panel discussion and Q&A session will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about local sustainability initiatives and explore ways to contribute.

Q&A session to be hosted by Kal Glanznig, with local panel members:

  • Colleen Hughson - Beach Patrol 3280-3284
