Preparing your Application

Write a Cover Letter

Cover letters are the first part of an application that an employer reads, so they are a great way to introduce yourself and show how you will be a good fit for the position and for Moyne Shire. You can do this by keeping your letter relevant to the position and focus on the requirements for the role.

Cover letters don’t need to be long, less than one page is ideal.

Update your Resume

Resumes show the positions, duties and training that you have, so they should be kept up to date and relevant to the position that you apply for.

You must include:

  • Your contact details
  • Your employment history including previous duties, volunteer work, or work experience
  • Your education and training qualifications
  • Any demonstrated skills that you possess
  • Any special achievements
  • At least three referees and their contact details.

Resumes should be no more than five pages long, two to three pages is ideal

Address the Key selection criteria

The Key selection criteria (KSC) sets out the skills, experience, qualifications and abilities that we are looking for in applicants for the role. They are a great opportunity for you to show us how you meet our requirements and to expand further on your resume.

The most important aspect of responding to selection criteria is to provide evidence or proof using relevant examples to support your claim. One way to do this is to use the STAR model:

  • Situation - Outline a specific time you showed the quality/skill.
  • Task - What was your role? What did you have to do?
  • Actions - What did you do and how did you do it?
  • Results - What did you achieve? What were the results of what you did?

A short, simple paragraph for each criterion is all that is required and should be completed as a separate document.

Proof read your application

Your application may be the first interaction we have with you, so it is important that it is professional and makes a good impression. Proof read your work to check for any spelling errors or typos prior to submitting your application.
